For many years Emerald Hill Mission has served the needy communities within the
Cities of Melbourne and Port Phillip, including the Central Business
District and Southbank. Our goal is to see alienated youth
change their lifestyle and lead more productive lives, to bring some hope to the
poor in our area and to offer the lonely somewhere to come and be welcomed with
a smile and a cup of tea. The Mission is comprised of Members who meet
regularly to provide the necessary advice and moral support to those working at
the "coal face". A Committee of Management represents a cross-section
of local community leaders including Father Bob Maguire, who is also Chairman
of Open Family. Working Groups develop day-to-day program activities and we
seek to raise the funds to support the Mission. We see our work as a
strong benefit to the local community with the main beneficiaries the disadvantaged
in the area, particularly those with public housing in South Melbourne, Port Melbourne
and St.Kilda. The work of our Outreach Worker saves many youths from peer
pressure regarding drugs and criminal offences that go hand in hand with drugs.
This is a benefit to all in our community. In
regards to other services in the area, we share our resources where necessary.
